TRAI Gives Clean Chit To Reliance Jio’s Dhan Dhana Dhan Offer

A clean chit has been given to Reliance Jio’s Dhan Dhana Dhan offer by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India or TRAI.

The Dhan Dhana Dhan offer provides customers a three months data and voice call plan for Rs 309, after it had to withdraw the Summer Surprise offer. The TRAI in a leading news paper quoted that the Dhan Dhana Dhan offer was different from Jio’s earlier scheme “Summer Surprise”. The telecom authority later found that the summer surprise offer was against the regulatory framework, and hence Jio was asked to shut down the plan.

According to the report, “The Dhan Dhana Dhan offer is a clear tariff plan, which offers subscribers 1GB data per day, for 84 days, on a recharge of Rs 309. Under the same scheme, Jio is also offering 2 GB data, for Rs 509 for the same duration. The tariffs of the Dhan Dhana Dhan, were “under forbearance” and TRAI does not interfere, as long as the schemes are not in violation of the telecom rules.

The Summer Surprise offer was neither a tariff plan, nor a promotional offer. It was a mix of both, which is not permissible under TRAI rules, which was the major reason for TRAI to stop the offer. Reliance Jio launched its free 4G data and free voice call service, in the form of “Reliance Jio Welcome Offer” on September 5 last year, since it has been involved in controversy with incumbent operators alleging violation of telecom rules. Jio initially, had launched the free service “Welcome Offer”, for a period of 90 days, till December 31, 2016. However, it later extended the free service for another three months, till March 31, 2017, under the “Happy New year” offer.

Reliance Jio, from April 1, has started its first paid services, “Jio Prime”, under which it offered Summer Surprise for three months at Rs 303, which was not in accordance with the rules, and hence was stopped. Then, Jio brought the Dhan Dhana Dhan offer for its 72 million paid users. Currently, Reliance Jio has a total 108 million customers. The company even has a target of adding another 100 million customers in a short time.
