Bookings for the sporty scooter Aprilia SR 150 have begun in Mumbai and Pune. A few of the dealers are currently taking bookings with token advances of Rs. 2000. Just last week, the price was announced as Rs. 65000 by the Piaggio Group.
Though the price is relatively higher than most of its rivals in the scooter segment, the Aprilia SR 150 has been much awaited. So, the Aprilia already commands a good prospective share of the market too. However, the competition in the segment is not a cakewalk with both the Honda Activa 125 and the Suzuki Access 125, competing fiercely as the heavyweights in the market. They are also priced lower than the Aprilia SR 150.
The Piaggio Group will now sell the Aprilia through the Vespa dealerships, though it had plans of selling the scooter through separate dealerships for the Aprilia scooter. The company may not take such a drastic step in the initial phases. It will all depend on the performance of the Aprilia to see if it will have a separate dealership as planned.
The engine powering the Aprilia is the same as the Vespa's 154.4 cc, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled engine; mated to a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The power output of this engine is 12 PS and 11 Nm of torque.
The Aprilia SR 150 is a very sporty and distinct scooter in its looks with the bold and aggressive telescopic front forks suspension and the larger tyres for a scooter. The headlamp is positioned much below the console in the mid-region of the front-shield. With a smaller instrument cluster, the handlebars and the position of the indicators seem to create better riding comfort.
Though the bookings have begun, an official Indian launch will be made in August. Currently, the scooter gets a waiting period of 30 days.
