Celebrating a goal is a big part of Football, otherwise known as Soccer in the USA. While the celebrations initially were nothing but a way to express a persons exuberation after scoring a goal, they went on to become the identity of people. It has thence become a tradition to have a unique celebration for several players. Sometimes, the players went the distance to be unique and at others a few crossed the line.
One such event of the latter case was observed recently in Mexico after two players had been “too unique” celebrating the goal while grabbing their crotch and celebrating obscenely after scoring a goal in the first division matches at the weekend.
Panamanian Luis Tejeda of Toluca and Efrain Velarde of UNAM Pumas were spotted holding their privates as they faced the audience and shouted at the crowd.
What ensued was a disciplinary action. The Mexican League disciplinary committee said, "Luis Carlos Tejada and Efrain Velarde are sanctioned with a fine of 2,000 days' minimum salary for making signs, gestures and showing obscene attitudes towards the public at the Azteca and (Olimpico) Universitario stadiums respectively.”
This amounts to a fine of 129,000 Mexican Pesos, or a $10,200 fine on each person since a minimum wage in the country is around 64.50 pesos.
After such pompous show of the privates and hollering, Toluca only managed a draw against America at Azteca on Saturday. Too big a price to pay for drawing a game!
