Union Cabinet Clears The Bill Of Legal Marriage For Women:- The Union Cabinet passed the proposal to raise the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years, same as men. Following this, the government will introduce an amendment to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 and will make the needed amendments for the Special Marriage Act and personal laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. All these changes are made as per the recommendations that are submitted to Niti Aayog in December 2020 that is headed by Jaya Jaitly. Recent data released by NFHS 5 (National Family Health Survey) said that the Total Fertility Rate is decreasing.
The decision was taken for the women empowerment told Jaya Jaitly. She worked as the former President of Samata Party. The task force was set up by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in June 2020. The feedback received was that the women should get married between 22 and 23 years. The task force also recommended introducing sex education in the school curriculum. Section 5(iii) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 says that women can get married after 18 and men can get married after 21. The Special Marriage Act, 1954 and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 also prescribed the same. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government will reconsider the decision about the marriage of women in the country.
