“Chennai Express” Producer Karim Morani Arrested In Rape Case:- Following the cancellation of his anticipatory bail a day earlier, Bollywood filmmaker, Karim Morani was arrested by the Hyderabad Police early on Saturday after he surrendered in a rape case.
The Hyderabad High Court's decision was upheld by the Supreme Court to cancel the Chennai Express producer’s anticipatory bail.
On September 5, the Hyderabad High Court of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had held the lower court's order a valid. As per the order, Morani's anticipatory bail was cancelled on grounds of concealment of the fact that he has been facing criminal trial in the 2G scam case and was in jail for several months. Mukul Rohatgi, the senior advocate for Morani did not give 2-3 days’ time from a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.
The issue of belated filing of the FIR was raised by Rohatgi and that too at Rangareddy District in Telangana. The senior advocate said it was not the case of grant of bail but rather one of unjust cancellation of the anticipatory bail.
It has been alleged that Morani had sedated the aspiring actress and raped her several times, took her nude photos between July 2015 and January 2016. There was no rape but it was a consensual sex with the girl, explained Karim’s lawyer. However, the victim’s counsel strongly opposed to this.
Initially, anticipatory bail to Morani on January 30 this year was granted by the session’s court at Telangana. However, it later cancelled it after being told that the producer had concealed in his bail plea his involvement in the 2G case and the fact that he was in jail in connection with the corruption matter. After hearings, Hyderabad High Court cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to Karim Morani in this rape case. So the producer moved to Supreme court.
On Friday, the Supreme Court refused to involve with an order passed by the Hyderabad High Court. Karim Morani’s appeal challenging the Hyderabad High Court verdict was dismissed by the Supreme Court. As ordered by the High Court, SC asked the producer to surrender before the Telangana police.
Karim Morani is an Indian film producer who has produced films like Chennai Express and Ra.One with Sharukh Khan.
