Ashwani Lohani Appointed As New Chairman Of Railway Board:- The Managing Director of Air India, Ashwani Lohani was appointed as the new Chairman of Railway Board on Wednesday.

Lohani will succeed AK Mittal. Mittal resigned as the Railway Boarc chairman, following two back-to-back train accidents. His resignation was tendered to Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu.

Mittal’s resignation came in the wake hours after the Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express got derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district early on Wednesday. Meanwhile, few hours ago, Suresh Prabhu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and offered his resignation. He even took full responsibility for the recent train accidents.

In the tragic incident, at least 74 people were injured. The mishap occurred as nine coaches of the Kaifiyat Express got derailed after colliding with a dumper at around 2:50 am between Pata and Achalda railway stations. In a previous incident on August 19, around 23 people were killed and 156 injured. This unfortunate accident happened after fourteen coaches of Utkal Express got derailed near Muzzafarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh.

According to official figures, in the last five years, 586 train accidents occurred, of which 53% were due to derailments.
