Drug Trade: Andhra Pradesh Leads The List:- Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister released the Smuggling in India Report for the years 2021-22 during the DRI’s 65th Founding Day Celebrations. Ms. Mishal Queenie D’Costa from Mumbai Zonal Unit, and Shri Bipul Biswas, from Kolkata Zonal Unit get the ‘DRI Bravery Award for the year 2022. During her speech, Nirmala Sitharaman said that Andhra Pradesh is leading the list in drugs and 18,267 kgs of drugs have been seized in the state during 2021-22. More than 90 people have been arrested in drugs related cases. The report said that the amount of drugs were seized by CRPF and the actual numbers are much higher. Among the seized drugs in Andhra Pradesh, 1057 kgs of ganja, 165 tonnes of red sandalwood have been seized in AP. Tripura is the second in the list with 10,104.99 kgs of drugs seized.

In Telangana, 1012.04 kgs of drugs have been seized from the other Telugu state Telangana. Several political parties slammed AP calling the state the drug capital of the nation. Assam is the third in the list with 3633 kgs of drugs seized. Chattisgarh stands fifth in the list with 830 kgs of drugs sezied. The red sandalwood smuggling is done in the forests of Chittoor and Kadapa districts. They are exported to China and Japan as per the demand. The reports said that they are exported mostly through the ports of Mumbai, Mundra and Chennai ports. Nirmala Sitharaman warned the central agencies and officials to keep a check for the big smugglers as the illegal drugs are reaching the country. She said that cocaine and other psychotropic drugs are reaching the country.
