Narendra Modi Inaugurates Atal Tunnel At Rohtang:- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh that is constructed to connect Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley. The Atal Tunnel reduces the travel time to Leh by five hours. Narendra Modi is said to be the longest tunnel in the world and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Himachal Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General MM Naravane were present for the event. Narendra Modi called it a historic day and it has been a dream of Indian ex Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Narendra Modi said that the infrastructure would be strengthened.

"Atal Tunnel is an example for world class border connectivity. There are several demands to improve the infrastructure and some of the projects are stuck midway. The tunnel is very important to Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The people of these regions would know the significance of cutting down the time of travel by five hours. Atal Tunnel is 9.02 km long and is built with ultra-modern specifications at an altitude of 3000 metres in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas" told Narendra Modi. The Atal Tunnel is in horseshoe-shaped, double lane tunnel with a roadway of eight metres and has an overhead clearance of 5.525 metres. It is designed for a traffic of 3000 cars and 1500 trucks per day and they can travel at a speed of 80 kmph.
Atal Tunnel is located at a distance of 25 km from Manali and the union cabinet decided to rename Rohtang Tunnel as Atal Tunnel.
