Karti Chidambaram Moves SC Against CBI Summons In Aircel-Maxis Case:- Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has moved the Supreme Court against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) summons in connection with the Aircel-Maxis case.
Karti was summoned by the CBI on September 27, to appear before it on October 4. Earlier, assets, bank accounts and fixed deposits worth Rs. 90 lakh of Karti were attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the case. The ED, during the investigation, found out that the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval given by P Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis deal was beyond his mandate.
Moreover, the amount for the FIPB approval was wrongly projected to conceal the facts, found the law enforcement agency in its investigation. It also discovered that in guise of software consultancy, the company promoted by Karti and his cousin allegedly received two lakh dollars from Maxis Group.
Karti denied to appear before the CBI in the case, earlier on September 14. He stated that all the accused have been discharged by a special court and terminated the proceedings in the matter. However, it was clarified by the CBI that the investigation in the matter is still underway.
Karti wrote the CBI stating that the investigation agency does not have any jurisdiction to issue any summons to him as per notice issued on February 2, 2017.
The CBI in 2011, received a complain from former Aircel head C Sivasankaran. In his complaint, he mentioned that he was being forced by the then telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran to sell Aircel to the Malaysia-based Maxis Communications group owned by T Ananda Krishnan. A special CBI court discharged Dayanidhi Maran and the others accused in the Aircel-Maxis case, earlier in February.
