SC Slams Modi Govt On Making Aadhar Mandatory

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s Government was slammed today, by the Supreme Court (SC), on the government’s decision for making Aadhar mandatory.

Modi government had made Aadhar mandatory, for applying for the Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards as well as filing for income tax returns. A news agency quoted SC saying, “ How can you make Aadhaar card mandatory when we have passed an order to make it optional?” Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi defended the decision of the government in the apex court.

Rohtagi told the apex court that, the government now has an Act, the Uniform Identification Number under which it took the decision. The agencies found that a large number of PAN cards, were being used to distribute funds for tax evasion, added Rohtagi.

Rohatgi quoted a news channel saying, “We found a number of PAN cards being used to divert funds to shell companies. To prevent it, the only option is to make Aadhaar card mandatory.”

Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, earlier had also supported the linking of the details of Aadhar with PAN card, for removing out tax evaders, who did not pay taxes by getting duplicate names in their cards. To make savings related settlement claims a hassle -free task, the Retirement fund body Employees Provident Fund Organisation or EPFO ordered its members to link their Aadhaar details with their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts.
