Heavy Rains to Continue for Next 2 Days: IMD

Many areas in Hyderabad, particularly the densely populated localities like Kukatpally, Nizampet, Quthbullapur, Madinaguda, Jeedimetla, Alwal, Kapra, Begumpet and parts of Malkajgiri were inundated following heavy rains early on Wednesday.

Several colonies were submerged as water entered houses and inundated roads, affecting public life. Roads in apartment complexes were under three to five feet of water, and quite a few cars were seen floating.

Three persons died in three different incidents. While a 55-year-old died in a wall collapse at Kompally, a 39-year-old electrician got electrocuted at Pragathinagar. Another youth died when he accidentally fell into drain water at Moulali.

Residents in Nizampet and Pragathi-nagar were stuck indoors as rainwater flooded cellars and entered houses. GHMC and locals could do little to pump out the water. Road connectivity was cut to these localities due to water overflowing from a few nearby tanks.

Floodwaters from Bimanikunta tank near Nizampet affected Ramky, Allwyn and Shathavahana colonies near Kukatpally. The bund of the tank was damaged in the early hours. Kukatpally traffic, law and order police and a GHMC team rushed to the spot and repaired the bund with sandbags. Overflowing rainwater from the Kukatpally nala led to knee-deep water at the main road from JNTU to Moosapet.

The Met department has warned that Telangana state will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days, more than what it received on Tuesday night. Heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in all districts of the state on Thursday and Friday.

IMD Hyderabad director Y.K. Reddy said, “Very heavy rainfall will occur over the next two days, from 11 cm to 20 cm.” He said the rains were part of the South West Monsoon that would continue till October 15 though the clouds would move southwards, away from the GHMC area.
