One Indian man and two Indian women are shortlisted for the one way trip to the Red planet, Mars which starts from the year 2024. The Netherlands-based non-profit organisation, Mars One has aims to set up a human colony on Mars and around 40 people will be sent to the red planet on a permanent basis. The three Indian candidates are Taranjeet Singh Bhatia, who is pursing Doctorate in Computer Science in University of Central Florida while other two are Ritika Singh, who lives in Dubai and Shradha Prasad, from Kerala.
Over 202, 586 candidates have applied for the Mars One project and about 660 candidates were selected for the second round which had 27 Indian men and 17 Indian women. The third round of selection was quite tough as candidates will be selected based on the personal online interview by Chief Medical Officer. About 100 candidates were selected in the third round which had only three Indians.
The final 100 include 50 men and 50 women, among them 39 hail from the America, 31 from Europe, 16 from Asia, 7 from Africa, and 7 from Oceania. All the candidates will be trained for seven years and a group of four will be sent from the year 2024.
