The famous singer Manna Dey (94) passed away today at 3.50 am at Bangalore hospital. Manna Dey who has been suffering from the lungs related health problem for the last few months was admitted to the ICU yesterday.
His real name was Prabodh Chandra Dey. He was born May 1, 1919 at Kolkata. He became popular with his nick name Manna. He lost his wife last year who died of cancer. He is survived by two daughters.
Manna Dey was honored for his contribution to the Indian Cinema with Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2007. He was awarded Padmashree in 1971 and Padmabhushan in 2005.
Manna Dey was gifted with a unique voice and style of singing that made him legendary. He started his singing career with Tamanna in 1942. His song in Zanjeer for Pran “Yari Hai Imaan Mera….” is very famous along with others like “Yemeri Zoharajabhi…” for Waqt and “Ek Chaturanar..“ for Padosan.
