Child care by Prisons of jailed mothers

The unique initiative adopted by the Prison authorities in the state's most filled jails at Chanchaguda and Rajahmndry is worth commending. Based on the recommendations of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) , the authorities have strictly adhered to the plan. As per the initiative the mothers of children aged 0-6 years have a child care center to take of their children, as children need their mothers for their needs. The authorities have sketched out a good plan to provide support for such children as they feel why the children must suffer for the faults of their mother. Also the authorities feel that by taking care of their children there is an over all change in the mothers that helps in rebuilding themselves.

As per reports nearly Rs 2,000 is spent by AP Prisons department on each child. The care center with in the prison is attended by two professional nurses and one doctor each. Regarding education, three teachers in each prison impart elementary education to the children aged between four and six at the school within. And unlike all other facilities by the government the quality of implementation of this scheme is phenomenally well and the children are really well taken care of.

However the child after six years shall be handed over to the relatives of the mother, if she still needs to serve her confinement. And in certain cases the the child might be sent to government child welfare hostels or children homes, as per the mother's wishesh. (With inputs from internet-AW AarKay)
