CBI grills AP IPS officer in fake encounter case

CBI officials of Gujarat wing grilled IPS officer and AP Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Intelligence) N. Balasubramanyam on Monday in Ahmadabad for nearly four hours on his role in the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife.

This was second time he was questioned in the case by the CBI sleuths who have been investigating the fake encounter case at the instance of the Supreme Court. Last week, Balasubramanyam and another AP Police officer Mr Srinivasa Rao were questioned by the CBI in Ahmadabad.

There is also speculation that the CBI officials may arrest Balasubramanyam and Srinivasa Rao any time now.
It might be recalled that Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausarbi were kidnapped allegedly by the Gujarat police during their bus journey from Hyderabad to Sangli in Nov 2005. They were later killed in Ahmadabad in a fake encounter.

CBI arrested and jailed Gujarat cadre IPS officer, D. G. Vanzara who was responsible for the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausarbi. The agency got inputs that Balasubramanyam who was the then SP of Prakasam district and Srinivasa Rao who was the then Inspector of the Rajendranagar police station in Cyberabad helped the Gujarat police pick them up from their bus.

CBI believes that the two police officials helped the Gujarat police in kidnapping the couple from their bus and their killing in a fake encounter later. The two police officials reportedly got to know about the whereabouts of the couple from Naxalite-cum-police informer, Nayeemuddin who went missing for the last two years. The same information was passed on to Gujarat police. (JUBS)
