Amid developing standoff between the fragile civilian government and the powerful military over the memo scandal, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari left for Dubai today.
Family sources said that Zardari left for Dubai to attend a wedding there and would come back after a day’s visit.
Earlier, Pakistan military chief General Kayani held a high level meeting with his commanders and the details of the meeting were not leaked to the media.
This is the second visit of Zardari to Dubai after the memo scam erupted and a confrontation developed between the government and the military establishment. Zardari visited Dubai five weeks ago for medical treatment after the scandal broke out.
The memo angered the military establishment as it was addressed by Zardari office to the American authorities with a request to take steps to curtail the powers of its military commanders. While the government dismissed the memo as just a piece of paper, military commanders took objection to it.
The Pakistani Supreme Court, which has been siding with the military, has been investigating the memo scandal and a formal verdict is awaited. (JUBS)
