Centre agrees to set up Telugu Basha Peetham in AP

The Centre has agreed to set up the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Telugu Language (Telugu Basha Peetham) in Hyderabad instead of at Mysore as proposed earlier.

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Mr Kabil Sibal disclosed this to news persons in Delhi today. “The Cabinet will shortly give approval to the shifting of the Centre,” he said.

The Centre had earlier announced that the Telugu Basha Peetham would be set up at Mysore but postponed its inauguration on Oct 29 following a hue and cry in AP. Prof. Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, chairman of Andhra Pradesh Hindi Academy, lodged a strong protest with the Centre over the decision. “It is an insult to the Telugu people,” he said in his protest letter to the Centre.

Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, and the leader of Opposition, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, had also urged the Centre to set up Telugu Peetham in the Telugu University campus in Hyderabad.
The MPs of various political parties also objected to the decision and demanded the Union Government to set up the Telugu Peetham in AP only. (JUBS)
