Earthquake rocks northern Japan

An earthquake of a magnitude of 6.1 on Richter scale struck several parts of Northern Japan this evening but the government has not issued any tsunami warning.

The quake had shaken Hokkaido, Japan’s main island but there are no immediate reports of loss of property or life, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

The epicenter of the earthquake was traced to 750 km northeast of Tokyo. The region lies in the “Ring of Fire” an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim. Japan was hit by several earthquakes in recent times but the March 11 earthquake caused much damage killing more than 30,000 persons and destroying thousand of houses.

Most of the earthquakes of the world occur in the areas lying in the “Ring of Fire”. (JUBS)
