Pregnant woman killed for bearing girlEnraged that his wife is going to give birth to a second female child, a person beat up his wife and strangled her to death in Shankarmatham mandal in Kurnool district Tuesday night.
 
Prakash Chari, father of a girl already, got her six-month pregnant wife Surekha scanned and came to know he would be blessed with a girl child again. Angry at this, he beat up his wife and strangled her at their house in Pedda Market Street.
 
Neighbors took a seriously injured Surekha to hospital but she succumbed to the beatings Wednesday morning in the hospital. On a complaint from neighbors, police arrested Chari and registered a case against him.
 
After coming to know of the incident, district collector Ram Shankar Naik said criminal action would be initiated against the Pavan Scanning Centre in the town for conducting the sex determination scanning test on Surekha violating the law.
 
The owner of the scanning centre will face an imprisonment of two years and have also to pay a fine of Rs.10, 000. Meanwhile, local people of the town demanded harsh punishment to Chari for murdering his pregnant wife.

In a similar ghastly incident, another pregnant woman, Sujatha, was burnt to death by her husband Ramalingeshwar after he thought that she would give birth to a female child.
