Moon to look smaller tonight!

MoonHere is some interesting news to the sky watchers and stargazers!

Moon will appear in its smallest and faintest shape tonight because of its position at apogee at a distance of 4, 06,434 km away from earth.

This means Moon, the natural satellite of the earth, will appear smaller by 12.5 percent than its normal size as it moves away from the earth by at least 20,000 km. Moon’s normal and average distance from the earth is 384403 km.

Not only the size will go down but also its light intensity will be 20% lesser as compared to the Super Moon of the March 19, 2011 when the satellite came closer to Earth  at 3,56,577 km perigee, according to Devgun, Director of Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE).
