SC's Lokayukta decision irks Jaitley

Arun Jaitley, the leader of the opposition in the Upper House has expressed his views which contradict the Apex Court's decision on the appointment of a Gujarat Lokayukta since it was possible that the courts use the upholding of the appointment as a precedent in Lokpal's selection. He said, "As a part of India's legislative and political process, I seriously disagree with the observations of the Supreme Court. The Act framed by the legislature does not give any primacy to the opinion of the chief justice," in a statement on behalf of the BJP.

The Supreme Court earlier upheld the decision to appoint the retired Justice RA Mehta as the Gujarat Lokayukta, which was not actually recommended by the CM Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers. He added that though the Chief Justice was an independent constitutional authority, the CM still retained his rights with a significant constitutional and statutory role in situations where the decision required executive interference and not a judicial one.

But would his resentment change anything now?
