Displaying the sign of extreme courage five brave fishermen jumped into the sea for saving lives of sailors from drowning. In the middle of the Cyclone Nilam havoc on the coast of Chennai the news is indeed remarkable as a sign of man fighting against nature's fury.

The incident happened when a  vessel MT Pratibha Cauvery's distress signal was spotted by fisherman K. Gopi and his friends on Chennai's Elliots beach . The signal was passed to the police as they saw some sailors jumping off the vessel into a lifeboat. Sensing the need of the situation those five brave souls just went into the menacing sea to save lives five sailors trapped inside the vessel. While police and the coastguard were just watching in surprise.

After the incident the gallant Gopi shared "I knew we could help. We decided to take our boat in and after consulting with the police and coastguard, we went in. Our families were scared and stopped us. But we told them that we can't watch people die in front of us. We had to do something,"

To add further another fisherman V Vadivel said, "We know the sea. We know how it behaves. This is our home. When we saw them struggling, we could only think of saving their lives. We didn't think of whether we would be rewarded for it or not."

However, this act of courage made the Jayalalitha government announce a cash reward of one lakh to  each of them.
