No more Blackberrys for the traffic police

Red light glows for the traffic police on their use of the Blackberry phones to curb the traffic violators due to the increased corruption in the field.

The phones were initially intended to put a check to the corrupt officers who have been pocketing rather large sums of fines. Blackberry's were efficient in collecting fines as the revenue from the fines doubled during the period of their use but the corruption levels have increased at an equal rate too.

The police management had thought better to phase out the use of the Balckberrys and automate the fines without human intervention by the use of CCTVs and digital cameras to catch hold of violators.

This way of "booking cases without human intervention” would be an efficient way to crack down the violators and also make the processes more transparent and corruption free. Until today CCTVs were used only for traffic management and not enforcement.
The police are also setting up a ‘video wall’, a gigantic screen to monitor the entire city traffic on a single screen at Traffic Management Centre (TMC) according to Banglore news agencies.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.A. Saleem mentioned that they would not mind violators who are not caught go free but they would not like the corrupt officials harassing them with fines.
