Private Tax Consultant sentenced to RI for accepting bribes

D R Mahajan, the judge ofthe special court had imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on private tax consultant Vijay Prahlad Agarwal (36) for accepting Rs 1000 as bribe to influence a income tax officer in 2009 and also sentenced him to one year of rigorous imprisonment.

The prosecutor argued that Agarwal had demanded a bribe from Rahul V Kirte, Hariganga society at Phulenagar in Yerawada who had lodged the complaint. Rahul had applied to release the IT refund order for about Rs.16000. Agarwal refused to pay the bribe and complained of the same to the CBI's anti corruption bureau.

Swati Desai leading the CBI officials had laid a trap and caught the perpetrator red handedly as he was accepting the money from Kirte. She seized the money from his pocket immediately.

Agarwal did not mention who the income tax officer's name during the interrogation. The public prosecutor Vivek Saxena had presented before the court that the money demanded by Agarwal was not his legal wage for the services rendered and should be punished for bribery. They also examined 6 witnesses before they proved Agarwal guilty.
