Significant growth in the girl proportions in IIM-L

Lucknow's campus of Indian Institute of Managementhas witnessed a great increase in the number of girls who were admitted into the post graduate program.

There are a total of 453 students in the campus out of which 176 are girls. 407 students enrolled in the post graduate programme had 144 girls while 23 of the 46 students of PGP ABM were girls.

Arunabha Muhkopadyay, the chairperson of admissions in IIM-L, said that the main focus was to ensure gender diversity this year and yet not compromise on the merit. There was a significant improvement in numbers this year. The last years 14% of girls in the campus has increased to a decent 37% this year. The IIM statistics provided by the officials stated that the 2012-14 batch has most number of students in PGP course in the history. Also there was never such high numbers of female students in the collge. Most students in the campus hailed from engineering with almost 80% students of PGP and 76% of PGP ABM.  Other students were from commerce, arts, science, medicine and miscellaneous in that order.

The proportions of engineering students who were admitted in the college has fallen compared to the previous PGP batch of 2011-13. 169 of the 453 students who were admitted had a work experience less than one year or no experience. 136 students had more than one year of experience but less than 2 year experience. 102 students had more than 2 years of experience.

IIM officials say that the rise in the female student ratio was clearly due to the 2% reservation advantage given to the girls.
