Delhi High Court directs police to act on the pleas of newly weds

Delhi High Court took a firm decision to curb honor killings of the newly weds and has directed the police to act immediately on their pleas.

The event took place after the police turned a deaf ear to the plea of a newly wed couple and Lalit Vats petitioned for a hearing at the Delhi High Court. Lalit Vats and Deepti Chikara were married to each other against the will of her parents as they both belonged to different castes. This angered her parents and her brother who murdered her to restore the family's honor.

Deepti's corpse was identified at a canal in Haridwar, Uttarakhand and her body parts were sent to confirm the identity by DNA tests.
Vats complained that the Investigation Officer did not take the complaint seriously.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice S.P. Garg demanded that the DCP should interfere with this case immediately and also requested that the Investigating officer be changed. The court alsoordered the DCP to offer protection to Vats.

A status report was filed by the police later that Deepthi's mother and her brother Mohit were arrested.
