After the bypolls the latest melodrama that unfolds is the Presidential polls. The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee along with the Samajwadi Part founder Mulayam Singh Yadav sprang a surprise on the Congress led UPA goverenment by expressing their 3 selections for the Presidential Candidature. The top in the list was former President Abdul Kalam who spearheaded the nuclear program of the nation. The second was the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, this decesion was seriously debated by the renowned and the third was CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee.
Now the question is will the missile man Abdul Kalam get a second term at the Rashtrapathi bhavan. The Congress has however rejcted the second term for the scientist and is supposed to give the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee a chance at the Bhavan. On the other hand the BJP led NDA is quite uncertain over the choice. It may be noted that Kalam was the NDA candidate in 2002. And Jayalalithaa extended her support to the missile man from Tamil Nadu for a second term in 2007 but as he wasn't a consensus candidate, he opted out of the race for a second innings at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
However the Bihar Chief Minister Nithish Kumar had invited former President to lunch and in a way that shows his proximity to the former prez. However after the lunchon undecesive Mr Kalam said "A lot of people have contacted me to ask me to serve as President. I will take a right decision at appropriate time." but the West Bengal iron lady had said in New Delhi today that she had spoken to Dr Kalam. "Kalamji will be contesting the election, he has said this today. We will like to congratulate Kalamji...Nobody should contest against him. I will appeal again to everyone to all political parties to give their support to APJ Abdul Kalam."
The dilemma still hovers whether the NDA and AIADMK would support his candidature. Sources close to the former prez also said that he would not contest unless he was assured that he would not loose. In that case he needs atleast 55percent of the parties in power to support him. Also it is unlikely whether he would evince interest to combat against Pranab da too!!
