Chief of the Army Staff, General Vijay Kumar, who is going to retire on May 31, gave a bumpy ride to many of the officials in the state and even the government during his tenure. He moved Supreme Court of India against the Government on his date of birth. Later, his allegations on bribe offer to clear purchase of Tatra truck trigerred a debate in the Parliament. He has even transformed the army into a modern fighting force. The General has said that his immediate goal after the retirement was to complete doctorate.
Days ahead his retirement, Vijay Kumar spoke some interesting things in an interview given to the Times of India. General Vijay Kumar has said that key changes were brought in with the transformation of the army. The training rules and regulations were improved besides combat and logistic support, he added.
Elucidating on Tatra deal, General Vijay Kumar said defence procurement is lucrative business. He, however, said it was a difficult job and stressed on the need of the government (the ministry of defence to strike a deal). He has also stressed on the need for transparency and said stringent action should be taken against those crossing the limits for making illegal profits. Also, he said instead of taking action against the culprits, people take on whistleblowers. (Phani)
