Relief to Raja, court grants bail

The former Telecom Minister A Raja was virtually praying as the Justice was reading out his judgment say live witnesses, at Delhi today. The Minister was granted bail, as the Judge announced that he must be treated on par with the other 13 accused that were granted bail. However CBI relentlessly claimed that Mr Raja could tamper vital evidences, for which the court rejected the argument. Mrs Raja was the happiest of the lot after the former minister can now walk freely after 15 months in prison. Since morning the minister who is lodged in the Tihar prison seems to be on a low note, not expecting positive outcome. However the judgment did bring back the lost smile on the minister’s face. He even cheered his supporters who had come to Delhi all the way from his home town.

The Judge OP Saini declared, "I'm of the opinion that further detention of the accused would not serve any purpose." The conditions for his bail make it necessary for Mr Raja to get the court's permission to visit both his home state of Tamil Nadu and his former office at the Department of Telecommunications. He has been asked to surrender his passport.

Mr Raja, a strong man of the DMK, has been accused of criminal breach of trust by a public servant" if the allegations are proved the Minister could serve a life term, in prison. The Telecom scam in the country has been termed as the `major corporate scam’ in the telecom sector costing the national exchequer by a few billions. Noted personalities of the sector are said to be involved in the mighty gamble that rattled the nation.  The 122 companies which were allotted the spectrum or licenses during the Minister’s tenure in 2008 were quashed by the Supreme Court this year. In 2011, Time magazine listed the 2G scam was placed at number two on their “Top 10 Abuses of Power” list (just behind the Watergate scandal). (With Inputs from Internet- Aarkay)
