A 61-year-old X-Ray technician from India has allegedly committed suicide in the UAE last week. According to the authorities, Vasudevan Sugathan who hailed from Kerala was found dead in UAE emirate of Fujarah. He arrived in Sharja 37 years ago and was employed with Ministry of Health in Sharjan.
Sugathan was a noted social worker who also ran campaigns against suicide. He worked with several India community organizations on the campaigns. In fact, he was the secretary of the Sharjah unit of a registered Indian association, Sevanam. Also, he was honoured by the Indian community for his social activities in 2011.
According to the official reports, Sugathan took leave from the office last Sunday and drove to far off place and allegedly hung himself in an under constructed building with the rope he purchased from a nearby super market. The bill given by the super market was obtained in his pocket.
Although there has been a mystery as to why he had to end his life, many people who knew Sugathan said his financial condition was worse. A close friend of Sugathan has said that besides loans, Sugathan had some family issues. Meanwhile, hundreds of locals took part in the last rites of Sugathan that took place on Sunday. (Phani)
