Perturbed over allegations that he had played a role in the 2G scam, Home Minister P. Chidambaram has reportedly offered to resign.

Chidambaram made the offer to resign when the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh called him over phone on Thursday to express his solidarity with the former on the allegations appeared in the media on his role in the 2G scam.

Even without giving any scope for the PM, Chidambaram made the offer to quit from the ministry following the leaking of a letter written by the Finance Ministry to the PMO in March 2011. The letter says that Chidambaram could have prevented the 2G scam if he wanted during his tenure as the Finance Minister in 2008.

After speaking to Chidambaram, Manmohan announced that he had full confidence in Chidambaram all the time. The PM also denied that there was any rift among the ministers of his cabinet on any issue.

The congress party leadership also fully backed the Home Minister and said there was no need for Chidambaram to resign when the matter was sub judice.
