Mumbai journalists began relay hunger strikes today demanding a CBI inquiry into the killing of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. On Monday, the journalists took out a protest march demanding immediate arrest of the murderers.
Dey, who worked as the crime bureau chief in the tabloid Mid-day, was shot dead by four unidentified gunmen from a close range at Hiranandani complex in suburban Powai on June 11.
The government has accepted the demand to bring out a law for the protection of journalists but refused the demand to have over the probe to the CBI. “The Mumbai police should be given a fair chance to probe the murder,” said a government spokesman.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had also refused to accept the demands of journalists that Home Minister R R Patil should quit and Mumbai police chief Arup Patnaik should be suspended.
