Senior journalist Jyoti Dey, who heads the crime news bureau of the English daily Mid-day in Mumbai, was shot dead by four unidentified motor-bike borne assailants. Police said the murder took place in the Hiranandani area of sub urban Powai.
Joint Police Commissioner (Law & Order) Rajnish Seth told media persons that the four assailants, riding on two motorbikes, fired at Dey from close range. Dey was taken to the hospital immediately by the local people but doctors declared him brought dead.
Seth said the assailants escaped from the spot before the bystanders came over there. Police suspect the gunning down of the senior crime journalist was the handiwork of the underworld mafia. “Crime syndicates, who are aggrieved by his efforts to expose the criminal gangs of the city, must have resorted to this grave crime,” Seth said, adding the police will surely catch the culprits soon.
Police have registered a case and are investigating.
