Radiation threat is magnifying multifold for the Japanese day by day with the sea water near the tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant getting contaminated unbearably.
Even as the technicians were struggling to restore the plant to its normalcy, it was found that the levels of iodine-131 in the Pacific Ocean waters just off the Fukushima plant were 1250 times higher above the permissible limit.
Radioactive iodine, cesium and cobalt levels in water in the turbine buildings next to reactors of the plant were found to be 10,000 times higher to the normal levels giving room to suspect that the reactor vessels, valves and pipes are leaking at some places.
Officials said that the volatile uranium-plutonium combination, the fuel lying inside the reactors’ core of the plant, has already started to burn its way leading to worries of salt build up in the crippled plant.
To avoid further build up of salt in the plant, engineers have taken steps to pump fresh water on the reactors with the help of the US military ships. It may be recalled that the tap water was found to be contaminated with radioactive material in several towns in the devastated north east of Japan.
