Breaking the all-time high of 76.57 percentage of voting recorded in 1967, an estimated 75 to 80 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. In the Union Territory of Pondicherry, over 85 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise, according to reports.
Chief Electoral officer Praveen Kumar told a media conference in Chennai after the polling that polling was by and large peaceful across the state except for some minor incidents. Braving the scorching sun, voters turned up in large numbers at the polling stations as soon as voting began.
The voting percentage figures are provisional and they may vary by little margins based on the reports of observers and polling officers, he said.
